Frequently asked questions

Does BP Diary measure my blood pressure?

No. No iPhone app can measure blood pressure on its own. Take a reading with your own blood pressure cuff, then tap Add Reading to save it in BP Diary. The app then shows the AHA category, trends and averages.

How do I take an accurate home reading?
  • Avoid caffeine, exercise and smoking for 30 minutes and empty your bladder.
  • Sit quietly for 5 minutes with your back supported, feet flat and legs uncrossed.
  • Rest your arm on a table so the cuff is at heart level, on bare skin.
  • Don't talk during the reading. Take two readings about one minute apart and log both.

You'll find a step-by-step guide in the Insights tab.

How does the camera heart rate check work?

Cover the rear camera and flash completely with your fingertip, press lightly and keep your hand still on a table for about 20 seconds. The app detects tiny color changes in your fingertip to estimate your pulse. It is for reference only and cannot detect heart rhythm problems. If the signal is poor, warm your hands, adjust the pressure and try again — or enter your pulse manually.

The camera measurement doesn't start.

Make sure camera access is allowed in the iOS Settings app → BP Diary → Camera. The feature needs a rear camera with a flash; on devices without one you can still enter your pulse manually.

I'm not receiving reminders.

Open the iOS Settings app → Notifications → BP Diary and make sure notifications are allowed. Also check that Focus or Do Not Disturb is not silencing them, and that the reminder is turned on in the app's Reminders tab.

How do I share my readings with my doctor?

Open Settings (gear icon) → Export PDF, choose a period and share the report by email, AirDrop or print. You can also export all entries as a CSV spreadsheet with Export CSV.

Where is my data stored? Is it backed up?

Your journal is stored only on your iPhone. We don't have servers and can't see or restore your data. If you use iCloud Backup or back up your iPhone to a computer, the app's data is included in that backup and is restored when you restore the backup to a new device. You can also export a CSV file at any time as your own copy.

How do I change the language or blood sugar unit?

Open Settings (gear icon) → Language to switch between 17 languages, or → Blood sugar unit to choose mg/dL or mmol/L.

How do I delete my data?

Swipe or tap a single entry to delete it, or open Settings → Delete All Data to remove all readings, medications and reminders from your device. Deleting the app also removes all of its data. This can't be undone.

What do the blood pressure categories mean?

BP Diary follows the American Heart Association chart: Normal (below 120 and below 80), Elevated (120–129 and below 80), Stage 1 hypertension (130–139 or 80–89), Stage 2 hypertension (140+ or 90+) and Hypertensive crisis (higher than 180 and/or higher than 120). A single reading isn't a diagnosis — discuss your readings with your doctor.

Is BP Diary free?

Yes. BP Diary is free to download and use.

Medical emergency? BP Diary cannot help in an emergency. If you have chest pain, shortness of breath, numbness, weakness, a change in vision or difficulty speaking, call your local emergency number now.
